What to expect

Modern life places constant pressure on your mind, body and nervous system

This retreat explores kindness, self-compassion and gratitude as evidence-based approaches to steady the mind, warm your heart, support the body and grow sustainable wellbeing

You'll explore how small, restorative acts will help you cultivate a kinder inner voice, savour what is good and increase positive feelings

A warm welcome in the Orangery to hear and explore your intentions for your day

Understanding neuroplasticity and how your brain can literally 'grow' feelings of kindness, compassion and gratitude

Kindness for the mind - walking-based meditation (outdoors - weather permitting)

Actively resting the body - using the body scan

Exploring self-compassion as the antidote to self-criticism

Using gratitude to build positive mental habits

Small group sharing and larger group reflections

You will have time to explore the beautiful Dawber Garden and enjoy space to pause and notice the new growth at this time of year

Your hosts, Dr. Sands (Mindfulness Skills4Life) and Will Crawford (quietnote), are experienced mindfulness teachers who bring something truly unique to the table.

Dr. Sands is a Lincolnshire-based scientist, nature lover, and gifted facilitator known for turning complex brain science into simple, life-changing tools and engaging, practical sessions.

Will is a professional musician and meditation guide whose live, sound-led mindfulness helps you drop into calm and clarity through deep listening.

Together, they blend decades of experience in mindfulness, music, resilience, and wellbeing — always delivered with warmth, integrity, humour, and care.

Charlotte House – the perfect retreat location

Charlotte House, nestled within the historic grounds of The Lawn in Lincoln, is a profoundly fitting setting for our wellbeing retreat.

Once home to the Lincoln Lunatic Asylum, this site was transformed under the visionary care of Dr. Edward Parker Charlesworth — a pioneer who challenged the harsh psychiatric practices of his time.

Long before compassion became standard, he introduced gentle, humane approaches that included creativity, music, nature, and movement as part of healing.

Collectively we and our hosts at Charlotte House feel that we honour that legacy by creating a space rooted in those same values.

Hosting this well-being activity at our boutique hotel is a source of great pride. In partnership with Sands and Will we're extending our commitment to enriching experiences. For us, at Stokes , like a perfectly brewed tea or coffee, it's about balance—offering both revitalisation and calm within our unique setting.

If you’re new or curious about mindfulness, you’ll be welcomed with warmth and care. You’ll be gently guided through each part of the day in a safe, supportive space where you can slow down, feel held, and discover what mindful awareness can offer.

If you’re a more experienced mindfulness/meditation practitioner, this is a perfect opportunity to deepen your practice, reconnect with yourself, and be restored through stillness, sound, nature, and science — a space to soften, breathe, and simply be.

Whether you're seeking calm, clarity, insight, or just a day to rest — you’ll be met exactly where you are.
